PROJECT

WHAT A MOVIE

What a Movie, is an android mobile app that helps users to get updates on all the latest news and buzz about Indian movies and artists. It aggregates  the movie ratings/reviews, trailers, news, galleries, events, birthdays etc., all in one app.

PROBLEM

THE CHALLENGE

The entertainment based apps are a crowded market with heavy competition. The design challenge was to craft a product that generates heavy user engagement and to ensure that WAM was the most preferred app by the users.

TARGET

MY ROLE

I was on boarded for the project on a freelance basis. I handled this project end -to-end which includes User Research, Personas, Wireframes, User Flows, UI Design, Interaction Design and Usability Testing.

EXPLORE

RESEARCH

I conducted extensive user research prior to designing. One-on-one interviews with a number of movie bloggers, fans and regular movie audiences, helped gain insightful data that was translated into meaningful features within the app design. Contextual enquiries and card sorting exercises were also used during the research process. Below are the UX Research insights:

Problems

Pain points of users

01
Finding the most important updates about their favorite stars as they are dwelled with multiple notifications.
02
Users want to see multiple languages content as they do watch other language movies.
03
Users are complaining about critic reviews as they feel that they are biased these days.
04
Users want to see most important updates like Audio release functions, Trailers and Collections and also filmography.

WIREFRAMES

For a quick user feedback, I designed high fidelity wireframes to gauge if there were any usability issues.

UNFOLD

SOLUTION

Users will be greeted with the latest movies and events, along with the ratings sliding from left to right. To go to a particular event, one has only to swipe up.

A WAM score is calculated by extracting and amalgamating the ratings from the top movie websites which includes user’s and critic’s ratings.

Multi-language content access is facilitated in the app, as India is diversified with different regional languages.

A detailed study about a celebrity, along with filmography and year-wise accolades with wins and nominations.

USABILITY TESTING

I tested the product at various stages of the project.

landing screen

Users had issues navigating from the landing screen until they learned the UI. To combat this problem, I redesigned a full screen display as a card style layout with a “skip” button. This allows users to quickly engage with the information or  they could go back to browsing  the app as usual.

3 out of 5 users were confused with the first version and the redesign helped engage 100% users.

IMPACT

RESULT

engagement increased by 30%

Reached 50,000 installs within one year of launch. Users rewarded the app with a 4.5 star rating and the overall engagement increased by 30%.
